UWS CERT Receives 2015 Citywide Deployment Award

In a recognition ceremony last night, Upper West Side CERT (M7) was presented with the 2015 Citywide Deployment Award by Commissioner Joseph J. Esposito and the NYC Emergency Management Department. The award recognizes the team’s outstanding performance in responding to recent crises, including the East Village and East Harlem gas explosion disasters, and the Ebola outbreak.

I wanted to share with you the incredible work CERT has been doing this past week. Wednesday’s building collapse on East 116 Street and Park Avenue in East Harlem had a major impact on the city. Throughout this response, CERT members have been integral to providing support to first responders and on-site agencies.

As we enter the coastal storm season, your Upper West Side CERT is gearing up to respond to the sheltering, safety, and other emergency needs of our community. In addition to our usual hurricane shelter activity at the Brandeis and Joan of Arc Educational Complexes, UWSCERT has been selected by the NYC Office of Emergency Management to serve in leadership roles in the Medical and Special Needs Shelter planned for John Jay College.

Leave No Animal Behind: Preparedness Experts and Volunteers Convene for Sheltering Workshop

Tuesday, July 30, 2013 – Emergency preparedness experts, citizen volunteers, and animal advocates convened this past week for an “Animals in Disaster Workshop for Emergency Managers and Pet Owners”. The half-day workshop was hosted by the Metropolitan College of New York.
