Message from UWSCERT Team Chief Shelly Fine: Volunteers Needed for Coastal Storm Season

Debris was what remained of the Rockaway Park boardwalk after Hurricane Sandy.

Debris was what remained of the Rockaway Park boardwalk after Hurricane Sandy.

As we enter the coastal storm season, your Upper West Side CERT is gearing up to respond to the sheltering, safety, and other emergency needs of our community. In addition to our usual hurricane shelter activity at the Brandeis and Joan of Arc Educational Complexes, UWSCERT has been selected by the NYC Office of Emergency Management to serve in leadership roles in the Medical and Special Needs Shelter planned for John Jay College.

Last year, during and after Super Storm Sandy, we were able to recruit 374 volunteers to supplement the services that our community provided to people in shelters and to assist in other locations in the worst hit areas of the city.

This year, we are asking our West Side neighbors to volunteer their help in advance of a possible coastal storm. If you know you can be available on specific days of the week at specific times of the day, that will help us in planning. If you are not certain about your schedule, please specify “if my schedule permits”.

Let us know if you have special skills such as nursing, mental health, computer data entry, counseling, etc. If you have experience working in shelters, tell us about the areas / activities in which you have worked.

Please contact us at volunteers@uwscert.org and provide the following information:

Name, phone number, email address, days/dates/times available, special skills, any volunteer experience you may have had in shelters and with coastal storms.

Volunteers really make a difference! Your assistance is vital!

Thank you,

SHELLY FINE
Team Chief
Upper West Side CERT
