East Village Building Collapse Relief & Recovery Information

Following last Thursday afternoon’s explosion and building collapse in the East Village on East 7th Street and Second Avenue in Manhattan, a reception center is open at Tompkins Square Branch Library (331 East 10th Street) from 9 AM to 8 PM.

I wanted to share with you the incredible work CERT has been doing this past week. Wednesday’s building collapse on East 116 Street and Park Avenue in East Harlem had a major impact on the city. Throughout this response, CERT members have been integral to providing support to first responders and on-site agencies.

As we enter the coastal storm season, your Upper West Side CERT is gearing up to respond to the sheltering, safety, and other emergency needs of our community. In addition to our usual hurricane shelter activity at the Brandeis and Joan of Arc Educational Complexes, UWSCERT has been selected by the NYC Office of Emergency Management to serve in leadership roles in the Medical and Special Needs Shelter planned for John Jay College.

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg today joined Office of Emergency Management (OEM) Commissioner Joseph F. Bruno, Police (NYPD) Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly, Fire (FDNY) Commissioner Salvatore J. Cassano and the City’s Chief Service Officer Diahann Billings-Burford in presiding over a graduation ceremony for 103 new Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) volunteers.
