Free Online Tax Service

Tax helpTax season is here and the Department of Consumer Affairs Office of Financial Empowerment wants you to know about a new, free way to file your taxes.

If you earn less than $58,000 (per tax return) and have an e-mail address, you can prepare and electronically file your own tax return using a free online program. You need a few things to use the program:

  1. 2008 Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) or Self-Selected PIN Number (If you don’t know your AGI, you can call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040 to find out your 2008 AGI)
  2. Social Security Number (SSN) or Individual Taxpayer Identification for all names on return, including dependents
  3. W-2 forms from all employers
  4. All 1098 and 1099 forms
  5. Proof of any other income, e.g., lottery winnings
  6. Total paid for child care provider and provider’s Taxpayer Identification Number or SSN (if you are claiming the New York City Child Care Tax Credit)
  7. Bank account and routing numbers (if you are direct depositing your refund)

Important: Type “NYC”, not “New York”, when prompted to fill in your locality (box 20 on your W-2 form).
