CERT volunteers are always polishing their skills. This past Saturday, it was Traffic Training, conducted by the NYC Office of Emergency Management (OEM) in conjunction with the NYPD. The exercise in rerouting and managing vehicular traffic took place on First Avenue between East 19 and 21 Streets in Manhattan. Twenty-two CERT volunteers from around the city participated.
The day-long training began with a classroom component, after which the trainees were allowed to practice their newly acquired skills in Saturday morning traffic. In the event of an emergency, like a major road closing or emergency evacuation, trained CERT volunteers would be available to assist the city’s first responders.
